In 1849 a pack train of Mormons discovered gold in what is now Dayton, NV.
A tent city quickly sprang up. This is considered Nevada's first (white) settlement.
Nearby Genoa also claims this title.
In 1859 silver was discovered in the nearby mountains. The Comstock Lode, as it came to be known, produced over $400,000,000 of ore by the 1880s.
These discoveries quickly led to Nevada's admission as a US Territory in 1861.
By 1864, Nevada was admitted to full US Statehood. It's silver helped sustain the Union Army during the Civil War.
